Light therapy may ease pain and protect roots during braces

NCT ID NCT06199674

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether using a portable light device (photobiomodulation) at home for 8 minutes daily can reduce pain, root damage, and improve gum health in adults getting braces. Fifty patients aged 18–35 who need premolar extractions will use the device alongside standard braces. Researchers will measure root changes, pain levels, and dental bacteria over time.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

photobiomodulation therapy (a portable light device used daily at home)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple, at-home way to reduce pain and root damage during orthodontic treatment.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 50 participants. The device may not provide significant benefits over standard care, and results may not apply to all orthodontic patients.
