Cash for quitting: phone app pays smokers to stay clean

NCT ID NCT04881630

Summary

This study is testing if a smartphone app that gives financial rewards can help low-income adults quit smoking for good. The app uses a breath sensor and facial recognition to remotely verify that a person has not smoked, then automatically sends them money. Researchers are comparing this approach to standard phone counseling and nicotine patches in 532 people across the country to see which is more effective and cost-effective.
