Can a simple throat device strengthen your swallow?

NCT ID NCT05708911

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether a pharyngeal exerciser can increase the workload of swallowing muscles in healthy young and older adults. Researchers will use X-ray and pressure measurements to see changes in throat movement and muscle effort. The goal is to understand if such a device could eventually help people with swallowing disorders.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Pharyngeal exerciser (device)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could point toward a non-drug exercise device to help people with swallowing difficulties.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early study in healthy volunteers, not patients. It measures muscle activity, not actual improvement in swallowing problems.
