New device aims to strengthen swallowing muscles in dysphagia patients
NCT ID NCT05708898
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a device that provides resistance during swallowing to strengthen throat muscles. 160 adults with swallowing problems (dysphagia) will use the device three times daily for six weeks. The goal is to see if it improves swallowing and reduces the risk of food or liquid entering the airway.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
pharyngeal exerciser (a device placed on the throat to resist swallowing)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, drug-free way to improve swallowing and reduce the risk of food or liquid going into the lungs.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with no phase designation. The device may not improve swallowing more than standard exercises, and results may not apply to all types of dysphagia.
