New nerve block could replace standard pain injection for hip surgery
NCT ID NCT05898581
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether a nerve block called PENG block can control pain after hip replacement as well as the usual method of injecting numbing medication into the surgical area. Sixty adults getting hip replacement will be randomly assigned to one of the two pain relief methods. Researchers will measure pain scores and muscle strength after surgery to see if the nerve block is a good alternative.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Ropivacaine (a numbing medication) and a nerve block procedure (PENG block)
What this could lead to
If the nerve block works as well as the standard injection, it could offer a better pain control option for hip replacement patients, especially those who cannot take opioids or NSAIDs.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study with only 60 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The nerve block is a newer technique with limited data, and it may not control pain as effectively as the standard method.
