Could a magnetic mat ease bladder pain? small trial aims to find out
NCT ID NCT06013449
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether adding pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy to standard bladder instillations of heparin and bupivacaine can better reduce chronic pelvic pain in women with interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome. Twenty female adults who already receive bladder instillations will use a PEMF mat during treatment. Researchers will compare pain scores and symptom changes over six weeks to see if the combination is more effective than instillations alone.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) device plus bladder instillation of heparin and bupivacaine
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a new way to reduce chronic pelvic pain and improve quality of life for women with interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome.
What could go wrong
This is a very small early study with only 20 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The treatment is added to standard care, so any benefit beyond the usual instillation is uncertain.
