Summary

This study looks at whether having peer support workers—people who have personally used drugs—in the emergency department can help people who use drugs feel more comfortable and less likely to leave before their care is complete. About 3,181 adult ER patients at Vancouver General Hospital who use substances will be offered support from a peer. The goal is to see if this approach reduces early departures and improves safety, while also learning how to best run such a program.
