Can friends help stop HIV? brazil trial lets peers deliver PrEP
NCT ID NCT06661356
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether having trained peer workers deliver HIV prevention medication (PrEP) in community settings helps more young people in Brazil start and stay on PrEP compared to standard clinic care. About 1,400 youth aged 15-24 who are sexually active and not currently using PrEP will be randomly assigned to either peer-led community PrEP or usual care. The goal is to see if this approach increases PrEP use and adherence over 13 months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
oral PrEP (daily or event-driven)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that peer-led PrEP delivery improves HIV prevention access and adherence among young people in Brazil.
What could go wrong
This is a behavioral intervention trial, not testing a new drug. Results may not apply to other settings, and adherence depends on peer relationships.
