New vaccine trial aims to shield vulnerable children from pneumonia

NCT ID NCT07252791

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests the safety and immune response of the 20-valent pneumococcal vaccine (PCV20) in children, adolescents, and young adults aged 2-25 with autoimmune rheumatic diseases like juvenile arthritis. All 114 participants will receive one dose of PCV20, and researchers will measure antibody levels and side effects for up to 6 months. The goal is to see if this vaccine can better protect this vulnerable group from pneumococcal infections.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

20-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV20)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that PCV20 is safe and effective in protecting children with autoimmune rheumatic diseases from serious pneumococcal infections.

What could go wrong

This is a Phase 4 study with a relatively small group (114 participants). Results may not apply to all patients, and the vaccine may not produce a strong immune response in those on immunosuppressive therapy.
