First seen Jan 07, 2026 · Last updated May 15, 2026 · Updated 20 times

Summary

This completed study looked at 1,529 intensive care unit patients to see if levels of a substance called procalcitonin (PCT) in the blood could help identify bloodstream infections and the type of germ causing them. Researchers measured PCT within 24 hours of taking a blood culture. The goal was to find a faster way to diagnose sepsis and guide antibiotic treatment.
