New PET tracer aims to spot Parkinson's protein in living brains
NCT ID NCT07348250
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This early-phase study tests a new imaging drug called [18F]MK-0947 that works with PET scans to show where a protein called α-synuclein builds up in the brain—a hallmark of Parkinson's disease. Researchers will check safety and how well the tracer works in 22 adults (some with Parkinson's, some healthy). If successful, this could lead to better tools for diagnosing and tracking Parkinson's.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
[18F]MK-0947 (a radioactive imaging drug for PET scans)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a new way to see Parkinson's-related protein buildup in the brain, helping doctors diagnose the disease earlier and track its progression.
What could go wrong
This is a very early, small study (22 people) focused on safety and imaging, not treatment. The tracer may not work as hoped, and results may not apply to all Parkinson's patients.
