Sleep through brain surgery? trial tests new Parkinson's procedure

NCT ID NCT04884412

Summary

This study compared two ways to perform deep brain stimulation surgery for advanced Parkinson's disease. Researchers tested whether surgery performed while patients are asleep under general anesthesia (without brain recordings during surgery) works as well as the traditional method where patients are awake and surgeons use brain recordings to guide placement. The trial involved 128 patients with Parkinson's who still had significant movement problems despite optimal medication.
