Brain training or stretching? new study tests which therapy helps Parkinson's patients walk better
NCT ID NCT07484451
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study will compare two types of physical therapy—strategy training (using mental cues and visual guides) and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (a stretching and movement technique)—to see which one improves balance, walking, and daily independence in people with Parkinson's disease. Forty-two adults aged 40 to 80 with mild to moderate Parkinson's will be randomly assigned to one of the two therapy groups. Researchers will measure changes in walking speed, balance, and overall function before and after treatment.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Physiotherapy (strategy training or proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation technique)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could show which type of physical therapy better helps people with Parkinson's improve their balance and walking ability.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial with only 42 people, so results may not apply to everyone. It compares two existing therapies, not a new drug or cure.
