Summary
This study tested whether giving the painkiller acetaminophen (Tylenol) through an IV every 6 hours during and after heart surgery could prevent delirium—a state of sudden confusion—in patients aged 60 and older. Delirium is a common and serious complication after heart surgery. The trial involved 900 older adults having bypass or valve surgery. Researchers checked daily for signs of delirium until patients left the hospital.
