Spine surgery pain showdown: nerve block vs. IV cocktail
NCT ID NCT07455565
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two pain management methods for people having elective lower back surgery. One group gets an ultrasound-guided nerve block (erector spinae plane block) with bupivacaine, while the other receives a combination of pain medicines through an IV. Researchers will use a special monitor that tracks heart rate changes to measure pain levels, along with standard pain scores. The goal is to find out which approach provides better pain relief after surgery.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- bupivacaine (nerve block) and a combination of paracetamol, morphine, dexamethasone, and ketamine (intravenous multimodal analgesia)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this study could show which pain relief method works better after spine surgery, helping doctors improve patient comfort and reduce side effects.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage study with only 100 participants. Results may not apply to all patients or surgeries, and both methods have known risks like nausea or allergic reactions.
