Nerve block combo may ease pain after breast surgery

NCT ID NCT07401602

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looks at three ways to manage pain after mastectomy: standard pain medication, a nerve block called rhomboid intercostal block (RIB), or a combination of RIB with another nerve block. Researchers will review medical records of 66 women to see which method provides the best pain relief in the first 24 hours. The goal is to find a more effective way to control pain and reduce the need for opioids.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
nerve block (rhomboid intercostal block and deep parasternal intercostal plane block)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that a specific nerve block combination provides better pain relief after mastectomy, potentially reducing the need for strong painkillers.
What could go wrong
This is a small, retrospective study (66 people) that only looks back at medical records, so it cannot prove cause and effect. Results may not apply to all patients.
