New study tests better pain control after lung surgery
NCT ID NCT07540104
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Aug 11, 2026 · Updated 5 times
Summary
This study compares two ways to manage pain after video-assisted lung surgery: a nerve block injected near the ribs and a small dose of morphine given into the spinal fluid. Sixty adults having elective lung surgery will be randomly assigned to one of the two methods before anesthesia. Researchers will measure how much extra pain medicine patients need in the first 24 hours, along with pain scores and recovery quality. The goal is to see which technique provides better pain relief with fewer side effects.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- bupivacaine with epinephrine (nerve block) and morphine (spinal injection)
- What this could lead to
- If one method works better, it could offer patients a more effective way to manage pain after lung surgery with fewer opioids.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage trial with only 60 people, so results may not apply to everyone. Both methods carry risks like infection or allergic reaction.
