Could a double nerve block ease pain after lung surgery?

NCT ID NCT04990713

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study compares two ways to manage pain after video-assisted lung surgery (VATS). One group gets a single nerve block, the other gets that plus a continuous nerve block with a numbing medicine. The goal is to see if the combination improves recovery quality in the first 24 hours. 200 adults having elective lung surgery are being recruited.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Ropivacaine (local anesthetic)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could lead to a better way to manage pain after lung surgery, helping patients recover faster and with less discomfort.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial focused on recovery quality, not a cure. The added nerve block may not provide meaningful benefit over the standard single injection.
