Pain relief combo for IUD insertion falls short as trial ends early
NCT ID NCT06951191
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study aimed to see if using a benzocaine spray before a lidocaine injection could reduce pain during IUD insertion. Participants were randomly assigned to receive different combinations of active drugs or placebos, and rated their pain on a scale. However, the trial was terminated after enrolling only one person, so it cannot provide meaningful results.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Benzocaine 20% topical spray and Lidocaine 2% injectable solution
What this could lead to
If it worked, this could point toward a more effective pain management method for IUD insertion.
What could go wrong
The trial was terminated early with only 1 participant, so no reliable conclusions can be drawn. Results may not apply to others.
