New pain block could cut opioid use after abdominal surgery

NCT ID NCT07331441

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests a new nerve block called the External Oblique Intercostal Plane Block (EOIB) to see if it reduces pain and the need for opioids after major upper abdominal surgery. 78 adults having laparoscopic surgery on the stomach, liver, gallbladder, or pancreas will be randomly assigned to receive either the block plus standard pain care or standard care alone. The main goal is to measure total opioid use in the first 24 hours after surgery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

External Oblique Intercostal Plane Block (EOIB) with ropivacaine

What this could lead to

If it works, this could provide a safer, more effective way to manage pain after major abdominal surgery, reducing opioid use and speeding recovery.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial (78 participants). The block may not reduce pain significantly, and there is a risk of side effects like bleeding or infection at the injection site.
