New pain block may reduce opioid use after kidney surgery
NCT ID NCT06892743
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study compares two ultrasound-guided nerve blocks for pain after open nephrectomy (kidney removal). 56 adults with kidney cancer will receive either an external oblique intercostal plane block or a posterior transversus abdominis plane block during surgery. The goal is to see which block reduces morphine use in the first 24 hours after surgery, potentially leading to better pain control and fewer side effects.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- nerve block (external oblique intercostal plane block or posterior transversus abdominis plane block)
- What this could lead to
- If one block works better, it could mean less pain and less need for strong painkillers after kidney surgery.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage comparison study (56 people). It only looks at pain control right after surgery, not long-term outcomes. Individual results may vary.
