Which pain block works best for hernia surgery? new trial aims to find out
NCT ID NCT07163026
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This trial compares two types of nerve blocks—erector spinae plane block and external oblique-intercostal plane block—for pain relief after open ventral hernia repair. Fifty adults scheduled for surgery will receive one of the two blocks, and researchers will measure how much extra painkiller they need in the first 24 hours. The goal is to find which block provides better pain control and reduces nausea and vomiting.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
bupivacaine
What this could lead to
If one block works better, it could mean less pain and fewer side effects after hernia surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial with only 50 people. Results may not apply to everyone, and individual responses to nerve blocks can vary.
