New procedure shows promise for treating pulmonary hypertension
NCT ID NCT03282266
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested a procedure called pulmonary artery denervation (PADN) for people with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a condition where blood pressure in the lungs is dangerously high. 128 adults received either the real procedure or a sham (fake) procedure. The goal was to see if PADN could improve how far they could walk in 6 minutes and lower their lung blood pressure. Results showed that those who got the real procedure walked farther and had lower blood pressure in their lungs after 6 months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- pulmonary artery denervation (PADN) procedure
- What this could lead to
- If successful, PADN could offer a new treatment option for people with pulmonary arterial hypertension, potentially improving their ability to exercise and reducing strain on the heart.
- What could go wrong
- This is a single, completed trial with 128 participants. The procedure is invasive and carries risks like chest pain. More studies are needed to confirm long-term safety and effectiveness.
