Could the 'Love Hormone' help prevent dangerous low blood sugar in diabetes?

NCT ID NCT06881459

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study looked at whether oxytocin, a natural hormone, can improve the body's ability to release glucagon during low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) in people with type 1 diabetes. Sixteen adults with type 1 diabetes received both oxytocin and a placebo on separate days to compare their glucagon responses. The goal was to understand if oxytocin could help protect against dangerously low blood sugar levels.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Oxytocin

What this could lead to

If oxytocin boosts glucagon during hypoglycemia, it could point toward a new way to prevent dangerous low blood sugar in type 1 diabetes.

What could go wrong

This is a very small, early-stage study with only 16 participants. The effect may be small or not clinically meaningful, and oxytocin may cause side effects.
