Could a hormone plus painkiller boost emergency contraception?
NCT ID NCT05695352
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This completed phase 2 study tested whether taking levonorgestrel (the hormone in Plan B) plus meloxicam (an anti-inflammatory) can delay ovulation by 7 days in healthy women. Nineteen women aged 18-40 took either placebo or the drug combo around ovulation. The goal was to see if the combo could give a longer window to prevent pregnancy. Results are pending.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Levonorgestrel (a hormone) and meloxicam (an anti-inflammatory drug)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could lead to a more effective emergency contraceptive that delays ovulation longer than current options.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase study with only 19 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. Side effects like nausea or cramping are possible.
