New drug combo aims to strengthen brittle bones and prevent fractures

NCT ID NCT03735537

Summary

This study tested a new treatment approach for adults with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI), a genetic condition that causes brittle bones and frequent fractures. Researchers wanted to see if a two-year course of a bone-building drug (teriparatide) followed by a single infusion of a bone-strengthening drug (zoledronic acid) could reduce the number of people who experience fractures compared to standard care. The trial involved 350 adults with OI who were randomly assigned to receive either the new treatment sequence or continue with their usual care.
