Lung cancer drug osimertinib under microscope: biopsies reveal resistance secrets
NCT ID NCT03586453
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This phase 2 trial tests the targeted therapy osimertinib (Tagrisso) in 30 people with advanced non-small cell lung cancer that has a specific EGFR mutation. Participants take osimertinib daily and undergo tumor biopsies during treatment and after the cancer progresses. The main goal is to understand how the cancer becomes resistant to the drug, which could guide future treatments.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Osimertinib (Tagrisso)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could help doctors understand why some lung cancers stop responding to osimertinib, potentially leading to better treatment strategies.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase study focused on understanding resistance, not proving a cure. Results may not apply to all patients, and biopsies carry risks.
