Spit test could replace uncomfortable lung procedures for pneumonia diagnosis
NCT ID NCT00342589
Summary
This study aimed to see if a new lab method could use a simple saltwater mouth rinse to detect a serious fungal lung infection called Pneumocystis pneumonia. This infection is life-threatening for people with weakened immune systems, like those with HIV or cancer. Current diagnosis methods are uncomfortable or hard to perform, so researchers tested if advanced lab techniques could find the infection in an easier oral wash sample from over 1,000 participants.
