New oral cocktail aims to tame resistant childhood cancer

NCT ID NCT00093353

First seen May 12, 2026 · Last updated May 14, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This early-stage trial tested a combination of two chemotherapy drugs (irinotecan and temozolomide) plus an antibiotic (cefixime) in 30 children whose high-risk neuroblastoma had come back or not responded to treatment. The main goal was to find the safest dose of oral irinotecan and see if cefixime could prevent a common side effect—diarrhea. While the study focused on safety and dosing, it offers a potential new option for children with this aggressive cancer.
