Dental checkups every 3 months may save cancer Survivors' teeth and smiles
NCT ID NCT07173270
First seen Jun 26, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether extra dental care every three months for three years can prevent or reduce late side effects like dry mouth, cavities, and jaw stiffness in head and neck cancer survivors. 300 adults who completed radiation or chemoradiation will either get this extra support or standard care. Researchers will track oral health, quality of life, and even work return to see if the program is worth it.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Oral health support (regular dental hygienist visits every 3 months)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could provide a simple, low-cost way to prevent serious mouth problems and improve quality of life for head and neck cancer survivors.
- What could go wrong
- This is a relatively early-stage trial (not yet recruiting) with no phase assigned. The intervention is supportive care, not a cure, so benefits may be modest and may not apply to all patients.
