Blood test could spare thousands from unnecessary breast cancer scares

NCT ID NCT07049822

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study is testing whether a simple blood test can help rule out breast cancer in women who had a suspicious mammogram. About 75% of women called back for extra testing turn out to be fine, but they still go through stressful and unnecessary procedures. The goal is to use blood biomarkers to identify low-risk women and avoid those extra mammograms and biopsies. The study will enroll 1,200 women from the Danish breast cancer screening program.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
blood-based biomarker test
What this could lead to
If successful, this could make breast cancer screening more accurate and reduce the need for additional, often unnecessary, mammograms and biopsies.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage study focused on correlation, not a proven diagnostic test. The blood test may not be accurate enough to replace current procedures, and results may not apply to all populations.
