Eye-Opening study: which anesthesia reversal drug is safer for your eyes?

NCT ID NCT07666984

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study compares two drugs—sugammadex and neostigmine—used to reverse muscle relaxation after surgery. Researchers will measure the optic nerve sheath diameter (the nerve behind the eye) using ultrasound at key times during recovery. The goal is to see if one drug causes less swelling or pressure on the eye nerve. The trial involves 86 healthy adults undergoing planned surgery, randomly assigned to receive one of the two drugs.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Sugammadex and Neostigmine (with Atropine)

What this could lead to

If successful, this study could help anesthesiologists choose the safer drug to reverse muscle relaxation, potentially reducing eye pressure risks during recovery.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase study focused on a temporary measurement (optic nerve sheath diameter) rather than long-term outcomes. Results may not apply to all patients or surgeries.
