Do pain pills change the aging brain? new study investigates

NCT ID NCT06837857

Summary

This study aims to understand if taking prescription opioids for chronic pain causes changes in the brain structure of adults aged 65 and older. Researchers will enroll 200 people with ongoing knee or shoulder pain. Half will receive a real opioid pain medication for 6 weeks, and half will receive a placebo (inactive pill), while all get a personalized pain management plan. The main goal is to see if there are differences in brain scans (MRIs) and thinking/memory tests between the two groups after treatment.
