New nerve block cuts opioid need for kids in kidney dialysis surgery

NCT ID NCT07012616

First seen Jan 25, 2026 · Last updated May 16, 2026 · Updated 17 times

Summary

This study tested whether a nerve block (supraclavicular brachial plexus block) could reduce the need for strong painkillers (opioids) in children aged 6–18 undergoing surgery to create an arteriovenous fistula for dialysis. Fifty children participated, and the main goal was to measure how much fentanyl (an opioid) was needed during surgery. The approach aims to improve pain control while reducing opioid-related side effects.
