Can skipping opioids during surgery speed up recovery?
NCT ID NCT07665463
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether avoiding opioid painkillers during major urologic surgery leads to better recovery. About 200 adults will be randomly assigned to receive either opioid-free anesthesia (using other drugs) or standard opioid-based anesthesia. The main goal is to see how patients feel one week after surgery, using a recovery questionnaire.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Opioid-free anesthesia (dexmedetomidine, ketamine, lidocaine) vs remifentanil-based anesthesia
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that avoiding opioids during surgery improves recovery and reduces side effects like nausea.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage trial (200 patients) and may not prove long-term benefits. The opioid-free approach might not control pain as well.
