Heart surgery without morphine: a safer way?
NCT ID NCT03816592
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether using a combination of lidocaine, ketamine, and dexamethasone instead of opioids during heart surgery could lower the need for morphine afterward and reduce complications. 110 adults having heart surgery with a heart-lung machine took part. The goal was to see if this opioid-free approach improves recovery and well-being.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
lidocaine, ketamine, and dexamethasone
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a way to reduce morphine use and side effects after heart surgery.
What could go wrong
This is a small, single-center study. The approach may not work for everyone, and there is always a risk of inadequate pain control without opioids.
