NCT ID NCT05856136

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looks at how the opioid fentanyl affects the diaphragm, the main muscle used for breathing. Researchers will give different doses of fentanyl to 69 adults having leg surgery and use ultrasound to measure diaphragm strength. The goal is to understand how opioids might weaken breathing, which could help prevent complications.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could help doctors understand how opioids affect breathing muscles, leading to safer dosing and reduced respiratory complications.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase study in a specific surgical population, so results may not apply to everyone. It only measures short-term effects, not long-term safety.
