One more hour on the ventilator: could it prevent breathing failure?

NCT ID NCT07324382

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looks at whether giving critically ill patients one more hour of breathing support from a ventilator, after they pass a breathing test, can reduce the chance they need to be put back on the ventilator within a week. About 4,000 adults in intensive care who have been on a ventilator for more than 72 hours will be randomly assigned to either immediate removal or one more hour of support. The goal is to find a better way to wean patients off mechanical ventilation.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

positive pressure ventilation

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple change in ICU practice that reduces the need for re-intubation and improves outcomes for patients on ventilators.

What could go wrong

This is an early-stage trial testing a procedural change, not a new drug. The benefit may be small or absent, and results may not apply to all ICU patients.
