Warm oxygen through the nose may help brain injury patients breathe easier after ventilator
NCT ID NCT07664085
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looks at two ways to give oxygen to people with acute brain injury after their breathing tube is removed. One method uses a high-flow nasal cannula, which delivers warm, moist oxygen through the nose. The other is conventional oxygen therapy, like a face mask or nasal prongs. Researchers want to see which approach better prevents breathing failure, such as needing a tube reinserted or extra breathing support, within five days after extubation.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
high-flow nasal cannula therapy
What this could lead to
If high-flow nasal cannula proves better, it could become the standard oxygen method after extubation for brain injury patients, reducing the need for re-intubation.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a randomized trial, so results may be influenced by patient differences. The findings need confirmation in larger, controlled studies.
