Fish oil and aspirin may boost gum treatment for smokers
NCT ID NCT07385300
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether adding omega-3 fish oil and low-dose aspirin to standard deep-cleaning treatment helps smokers with severe gum disease. Forty-five smokers were split into three groups: one got omega-3 and aspirin, another got those plus the antibiotic doxycycline, and the third got only deep cleaning. The goal was to see if the supplements improve gum pocket depth and attachment levels better than cleaning alone.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil), aspirin, and doxycycline
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a better way to treat gum disease in smokers, who often respond poorly to standard treatment.
What could go wrong
This is a small, completed trial with only 45 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The benefits seen may be modest and need confirmation in larger studies.
