Algae vs. fish: which Omega-3 source wins in absorption?

NCT ID NCT07241377

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether omega-3 from algae is absorbed as well as omega-3 from fish oil. About 120 healthy adults will take algae oil, fish oil, or a placebo daily for 6 weeks. Researchers will measure omega-3 levels in the blood to compare absorption.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA + DHA) from microalgal oil or fish oil

What this could lead to

If successful, this study could show that algae-based omega-3 supplements are as well absorbed as fish oil, offering a sustainable, plant-based alternative.

What could go wrong

This is a small, short-term study in healthy people, so results may not apply to those with health conditions. It only measures absorption, not long-term health benefits.
