Antipsychotic drug could quiet ringing ears

NCT ID NCT07190482

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This completed Phase 1 study tested whether olanzapine, an antipsychotic drug, can reduce the discomfort of tinnitus (ringing in the ears). Fifty adults with stable tinnitus for at least 6 months received either olanzapine or a placebo in a crossover design. The main goal was to see if olanzapine lowers tinnitus-related distress, measured by a standard questionnaire.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Olanzapine (Zyprexa) 5 mg oral tablet

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a new way to reduce the distress of tinnitus for some people.

What could go wrong

This is a very early Phase 1 trial with only 50 participants. Olanzapine is an antipsychotic with side effects, and it may not work better than a placebo for tinnitus.
