Could a common mental health drug prevent weight loss in cancer patients?
NCT ID NCT07633236
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing whether a low dose of olanzapine, a drug usually used for mental health conditions, can prevent or treat the loss of appetite and weight that often happens in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. About 100 adults with stomach or ovarian cancer will take the drug daily during their pre-surgery chemo. The goal is to see if it helps them maintain weight, control nausea, and feel better overall.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
olanzapine (a drug typically used for mental health conditions, here at a low dose)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a simple, low-cost way to help cancer patients maintain weight and quality of life during chemotherapy.
What could go wrong
This is a single-center trial with only 100 participants, so results may not apply broadly. Olanzapine can cause side effects like drowsiness or metabolic changes.
