Can a smarter antibody outsmart a kidney disease that resists standard treatment?
NCT ID NCT05050214
First seen Aug 11, 2026 · Last updated Aug 12, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial tests whether obinutuzumab, a next-generation antibody, can help people with membranous nephropathy—a kidney disease that causes protein leakage and swelling—who haven't responded well to the standard drug rituximab or who can't take it due to allergic reactions. About 20 adults with biopsy-confirmed disease and high protein levels will receive three infusions of obinutuzumab over one month. The study will track whether the drug brings about partial or complete remission of the nephrotic syndrome and will monitor for side effects.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- obinutuzumab (a monoclonal antibody given as three infusions over one month)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, obinutuzumab could offer a new treatment option for people with membranous nephropathy who don't respond to or can't tolerate rituximab, potentially reducing protein in the urine and protecting kidney function.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small pilot study, so results may not apply to everyone. Obinutuzumab can cause infusion reactions, infections, and other side effects, and it's not yet clear if it will be more effective or safer than rituximab.
