Nurses take the lead: new study tests Nurse-Run chest pain diagnosis in emergency rooms
NCT ID NCT06149819
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This pilot study is testing whether specially trained nurses can safely diagnose non-traumatic chest pain in the emergency department using a step-by-step guide based on medical recommendations. About 182 adults with chest pain will be split into two groups: one managed by nurses using the new pathway, and one receiving usual care from doctors. The goal is to see if the nurse-led approach is just as safe and effective, which could lead to faster care and less strain on emergency doctors.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
nurse-led diagnostic pathway
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that specially trained nurses can safely and effectively manage chest pain in the emergency department, potentially speeding up care and freeing up doctors.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study (182 people) at one hospital, so results may not apply everywhere. It tests a process, not a new drug, so the impact is limited to how care is delivered.
