Does adding a cleaning step to wound vacs help severe infections?

NCT ID NCT07120386

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study tests two types of wound vacuum therapy for people with severe, flesh-eating infections. One method just uses suction, while the other also cleans the wound with a dilute bleach solution. Researchers want to see if the cleaning method leads to fewer hospital readmissions and faster healing. The trial will enroll 30 adults and is a first step to see if a larger study is possible.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Negative pressure wound therapy with or without instillation (hypochlorous acid)

What this could lead to

If NPWTi proves better, it could reduce hospital readmissions and speed up wound healing for people with severe infections.

What could go wrong

This is a small pilot study with only 30 people, so results may not be conclusive. The instillation adds a step and may not improve outcomes over standard therapy.
