New blood test could spot type 1 diabetes before symptoms strike

NCT ID NCT04164966

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looks for tiny particles in the blood, called exosomes, that might signal the start of type 1 diabetes. Researchers will compare children recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes to healthy children, all aged 12 to 18. The goal is to find a better way to catch the disease early and track how it progresses.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could lead to a simple blood test to diagnose type 1 diabetes earlier, potentially before symptoms appear.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage study with only 28 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The biomarkers being studied are experimental and may not prove reliable.
