Do surgical glues really prevent brain fluid leaks? new trial aims to find out

NCT ID NCT07216157

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study compares two types of surgical sealants (fibrin glue and a synthetic polymer) against no sealant in preventing cerebrospinal fluid leaks after nose-based skull base surgery. About 225 adults with low leak risk will be randomly assigned to one of three groups. The goal is to see if sealants actually improve outcomes, helping surgeons make more evidence-based and cost-effective decisions.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

fibrin glue (Tisseel) and synthetic polymer sealant (Adherus)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that sealants are unnecessary for low-risk patients, saving costs and avoiding potential side effects.

What could go wrong

This is a single-center trial with 225 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The study focuses on low-risk patients, so findings may not extend to higher-risk cases.
