Knee replacement avoided? study tests 3-Month exercise and diet program
NCT ID NCT06623149
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study looks at whether a 3-month non-surgical program—including patient education, supervised exercise, and diet counseling—can help people with knee osteoarthritis avoid knee replacement surgery while maintaining their quality of life. Researchers will follow 2,500 patients referred for knee surgery in Denmark over two years. The goal is to see if this approach reduces the number of surgeries without harming patients' well-being.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Non-surgical management program (education, exercise, weight loss counseling)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could show that many knee replacements can be safely avoided with a structured non-surgical program, improving patient outcomes and reducing healthcare costs.
What could go wrong
This is an observational study, not a randomized trial, so results may be influenced by patient selection. The program may not work for everyone, and some patients may still need surgery.
