Hernia patients may ditch opioids without extra pain, study finds

NCT ID NCT05929937

First seen Nov 11, 2025 · Last updated Apr 29, 2026 · Updated 18 times

Summary

This study tests whether giving no opioid painkillers after routine inguinal hernia repair works as well as giving a small number of opioid pills. About 900 adults having outpatient hernia surgery will be randomly assigned to receive either no opioids or up to 5 oxycodone tablets. The main goal is to see if the no-opioid group asks for refills more often, and to compare pain and quality of life at 30 days.
