No pain pills? study tests Opioid-Free recovery after hernia repair
NCT ID NCT05929937
First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This phase 4 trial compares giving no opioids versus a small prescription of 5 opioid tablets after inguinal hernia repair. About 904 adults having elective surgery will be randomly assigned to either group. The main goal is to see if the no-opioid group requests fewer refills while still managing pain and quality of life equally well.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Opioids (Oxycodone 5mg tablets)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could show that many hernia repair patients can manage pain without opioids, reducing the risk of opioid dependence.
- What could go wrong
- This is a single study on a specific surgery type, so results may not apply to other procedures. Some patients may still need opioids for adequate pain relief.
